This pub is about 5 minutes' walk from my house so I've got to know it well. I'm a (non-bearded, non-sandalled) member of CAMRA so really appreciate the range and quality of the real ales. The over-21 policy is great as the moron count is thereby diminished. The decor is back-to-basics stripped wooden floors and old but solid tables and a few comfortable old armchairs. Hundreds of different beermats line the walls to make the point this is a beer drinker's pub. The food is simple but fine: pizzas from a proper oven, full breakfast on Saturdays and simple roasts on Sundays. Nothing ambitiously drizzed with jus or described in French lifted from the Chanson de Roland. Good value overall and customer-oriented service. The lunchtime clientele seems to come from nearby businesses and it's getting busier as word of mouth spreads its reputation. The evening crowd is more male and older but quiet and friendly.
