Wildlife Gardening Talk: Know your Soil and No Dig Gardening, 29th May 2025, 18:00 to 20:00 at Sutton Courtenay Environmental Education Centre (21.1 miles)
Discover the secrets of your soil and the principles of no dig gardening with organic gardening expert Robert Longstaff.
Knowing your soil is about identifying what you have and how best to improve it. You'll learn about the natural cycles that create soil, and find out why fungi are important in soil health. No dig is a way of managing your soil that is gaining in popularity, working with the natural cycle rather than against it. Organic gardening expert Robert Longstaff will explain it all, and answer your questions too!
The talk will start at 6pm in the education centre, but the reserve will be open from 5pm if you would like to take a walk or have a picnic first. We have our own vegetable garden in small raised beds onsite which you can explore too. After the main talk there will be time for questions. Hot drinks and biscuits provided. This event has been made possible by the Vale of the White Horse District Council Climate Action Fund.

A course for adults to carve their own spoon from green wood, using an axe and carving knives.
Carving freshly cut green wood with a sharp axe and knife is immensely satisfying and making a product that is both practical and beautiful from locally harvested wood is very rewarding. We’ll also cover tool sharpening and finishes for your spoon. All tools and materials are provided, just bring enthusiasm!
The course will be led by David Knight, David says "I have been exploring woodland crafts for over 20 years and have a keen interest in relating an understanding of woodland ecology with the practical skills of woodland management and craft skills of making products from a wonderful sustainable raw material. I take my past experience in University continuing education into my teaching of craft skills to offer a rich immersive experience."
The course will take place on the lovely nature reserve at Sutton Courtenay Environmental Education Centre. Please bring a packed lunch. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided. We plan to hold the course outdoors, please come dressed for the weather, including sturdy footwear as paths may be wet and muddy. Wildlife Gardening Workshop: Low Input Gardening and Wildlife Ponds, 8th June 2025, 10:00 to 13:00 at Sutton Courtenay Environmental Education Centre (21.1 miles)
Learn how "less" can be "more" in gardening with our visiting expert, then find out for yourself the benefits a pond offers in your garden.
This half day workshop combines a talk on Low Input Gardening and a Q+A session from organic gardening expert Robert Longstaff; with a practical pond exploration session, discovering the importance of water in your garden. The talk will focus on Low Input Gardening. When gardening in harmony with nature, often less is more! You'll learn how to become "almost organic", picking up tips on re-use and recycling, reducing the amount of money you spend on your garden and gardening with nature.
The talk will finish with a Q and A session then a break for tea and biscuits (provided). After the break you'll join, SCEEC learning manager, Charlotte Howe to learn about the role of ponds in a wildlife friendly garden. This will be a practical session - using nets to dip out samples of the tiny animals living in the pond, then learning to identify them. We'll discover what the invertebrate population can tell you about the health of your pond, and how the pond is integral to a healthy and diverse garden ecosystem.
Hot drinks and biscuits provided. This event has been made possible by the Vale of the White Horse District Council Climate Action Fund.
