The evening has two works. Schubert's Fourth Symphony (The `Tragic') and Beethoven's Mass in C, for which the orchestra will be joined by members of the Thames Consort and the Dorchester Abbey Choir.

The Schubert work is in the standard four movements and is a staple of the orchestral repertoire. The name `Tragic' was applied to the work by the composer some time after it's composition. Although the work is rather more intense than usual with Schubert, it still has plenty of melodic appeal and is thrilling both to play and listen to.

Following on is the Mass in C, by Ludwig van Beethoven. Written in 1807, it is scored for four vocal soloists, choir and the usual classical orchestra and follows the form set by Haydn. Beethoven could well have studied the works in similar form by Haydn in composing this.
